SCORM, xAPI or LTI: which to choose?

Three protocols dominate the integration of e-learning content into LMSs. Understanding their differences will help you choose the approach best suited to your infrastructure and reporting objectives.

SCORM 95% of LMSs
The universal standard

SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 remain the most widely supported protocols: virtually all LMSs support them natively, without extra configuration. SCORM returns completion, overall score and time spent. The natural choice if your LMS is older or your IT team wants frictionless integration. Main limitation: data is not granular — SCORM does not capture interactions inside a VR simulation or exchanges with an AI avatar.

Best for Legacy LMS, fast deployment
xAPI Modern standard
Granular data

Experience API (xAPI / Tin Can) records each interaction as an independent statement: "the learner chose option B in the interview scenario", "scored 87 on the HSE simulation". These data are stored in a Learning Record Store (LRS), often built into modern LMSs (Moodle 3.x, Docebo, 360Learning). xAPI is the recommended protocol for immersive training: it captures the richness of VR and AI avatar interactions, works off-LMS and supports multi-device learning.

Best for VR simulations, AI avatars, detailed reporting
LTI 1.3 No redeployment
The hosted tool

LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) does not package content: it delegates authentication to your LMS and redirects the learner to our hosted environment. Content stays on our servers, always up to date, with no action needed from your side at each update. The preferred approach for conversational AI avatars that evolve frequently — new languages, new scenarios. LTI requires light configuration on the LMS admin side but proves the most agile over time.

Any LMS supporting SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI or LTI 1.3 is compatible — the vast majority of the market. A 30-minute call with your LMS administrator is enough to confirm.

Our approach

Your stack. Our simulations.

Every organisation has its own training environment. Rather than imposing a new platform, we look at how our immersive experiences VR and AI avatars can fit naturally into what you already have in place.

The practical modalities depend on your context, infrastructure and objectives. That's why we prefer to discuss this directly with your teams.

No disruption to the learning path

The learner stays in their usual environment. The immersive experience slips in without visible friction.

Adapted to your context

Each integration is assessed case by case, based on your infrastructure, constraints and technical teams.

Dedicated support

Our team stays involved throughout deployment to ensure an implementation that actually works.

Process

How does an integration work?

From initial audit to production launch, here are the 6 steps of a typical deployment.

01

Technical audit

A 30-minute call with your L&D and IT teams to map your infrastructure: LMS in place, version, admin rights, network constraints, target devices (PC, tablet, standalone or PC VR headset).

02

Protocol selection

Based on your context and reporting objectives, we recommend SCORM, xAPI or LTI. We document the choice and its implications for your IT and L&D teams to facilitate internal sign-off.

03

Packaging & configuration

Our teams prepare SCORM packages, configure xAPI endpoints connected to your LRS, or set up the LTI connector according to the exact specifications of your platform.

04

Staging tests

Integration into a test environment of your LMS. Validation of data flows: completion, score, xAPI statements. Iterations until full sign-off by your technical teams.

05

Team training

Onboarding session with your LMS administrators and training managers: content management, reading completion reports, update procedure, and access to Avatar Académie.

06

Production & ongoing monitoring

Learner rollout. Monitoring during the first weeks, adjustments as needed. Ongoing access to Avatar Académie to track engagement, refine scenarios and export data to your HRIS.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from IT & L&D teams.

Our LMS is not in the list of compatible platforms. Is that a blocker?

No. The list shows a few well-known examples, but any system supporting SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI or LTI 1.3 is technically compatible — which covers the vast majority of enterprise LMSs on the market. A 30-minute technical call with your LMS administrator is enough to confirm it before any commitment.

Can we retrieve interaction data from inside VR simulations in our LMS reporting?

Yes, via the xAPI protocol. Unlike SCORM, xAPI allows you to retrieve each interaction: scenario chosen, selected answer, emotional score of the avatar, time per step. This data is stored in your LRS and viewable in your training dashboards, or exportable to your HRIS via API.

Is VR content hosted on your servers or ours?

Both options are possible depending on your security policy and IT constraints. Conversational AI avatars are hosted on our European infrastructure (GDPR-compliant). VR simulations for standalone headsets run in embedded mode, with no network dependency. For web and tablet modules, we can explore hosting on your infrastructure on request.

What bandwidth is required for enterprise AI avatars?

A standard 5 Mbps connection is sufficient for a web or tablet conversational AI avatar. VR simulations on standalone headsets work offline once downloaded. On enterprise networks, we recommend a load test during the staging phase before any mass deployment.

How are content updates managed after deployment?

With SCORM, each major update requires republishing the package in your LMS — a few minutes for an administrator. With LTI or via Avatar Académie, updates are transparent: content is updated server-side without any action on your part. For AI avatars, new languages and scenarios are available immediately without redeployment.
